A first generation funeral director, Mr. Nelson was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Idaho. He became interested in the death care profession at age 12 when he and his father operated a cemetery. He has worked in the funeral industry ever since. Nelson Family Mortuary is a result of years of research and planning to create a higher standard of funeral care.
Mr. Nelson describes the modern structure as “light, bright and comforting”. A 15-ft. high glass wall extends the entire length of the chapel, framing the mountain vista. A nearby private garden is a place for families to gather and mourn or meditate. Architecturally, the funeral home is contemporary in design, yet employs certain traditional forms to preserve the intimacy of a residential environment.
Adding to the success of the building project, interior features include state-of-the-art audio visual technology and a twenty-first century preparation room which was open to visitors during the Open House tour. One of the amenities offered is real time online broadcasting of funeral services held in the chapel, allowing those who cannot physically travel to attend online.
Duncan Stuart Todd, Ltd. was selected to design and equip the preparation room which Mr. Nelson appreciates first and foremost for the air quality. “I had been sick working in other embalming rooms,” he said, “and now the odor and fumes are non-existent, allowing me to perform a higher quality of service.”
Architect of the funeral home was Guilford Rand of Architectural Coalition in Springville, UT.
Nelson Family Mortuary is located at 4780 North University Avenue, Provo, UT 84604.
